The CrossFit Open is upon us, and with it comes that unique blend of excitement, camaraderie, and a little bit of healthy competition! As our community gears up to tackle the workouts, there’s one crucial element that underpins the integrity and fairness of the Open: judging.

For many of you, this will be your first time judging another athlete. Don’t worry, it’s a super rewarding experience, and we’ll make sure you’re well-prepared. However, it’s also a role we take seriously, and here’s why holding ourselves and each other to the highest standard is so important.
The Spirit of Fair Play: Why Standards Matter
CrossFit is built on measurable, observable, and repeatable results. When we judge, we are upholding the very essence of this methodology. Every rep, every movement, has a defined standard. These aren’t arbitrary rules; they exist to:
- Ensure Fairness: Imagine two athletes giving their all, but one is getting reps counted without hitting depth while the other is held to strict standards. By judging consistently, we ensure a level playing field for everyone.
- Protect Athletes: Proper movement standards are often tied directly to safety. Ensuring full range of motion helps reinforce good movement patterns and reduces the risk of injury.
- Validate Effort: When you finish a workout knowing every rep was “good,” you know you truly earned that score. As a judge, you are the guardian of that accomplishment.
- Uphold Integrity: The Open is a global competition. Inaccurate judging, even unintentional, impacts the integrity of the worldwide leader board.
Don’t Panic! We’ll Show You the Ropes

We know the idea of judging can seem daunting. That’s why we will be hosting dedicated briefing sessions before each Open workout night. On the night, we will:
- Review the Workout Standards: We’ll break down each movement and demonstrate what constitutes a “good rep” and what is a “no rep.”
- Provide Clear Demonstrations: We’ll show you exactly what to look for, highlighting common faults and how to spot them.
- Answer All Questions: There will be plenty of time to clarify doubts before the clock starts ticking.
Understanding the CrossFit Scorecard

For each workout, you’ll get an official scorecard – this is what we use to track your performance. Here’s the quick rundown:
- Athlete Info: Make sure the name and division (Rx, Scaled, etc.) on the card are correct before you start.
- Counting Reps: Your main job is simple – count reps as they happen and jot them down in the boxes on the card.
- No Reps: If something doesn’t meet the standard, call out “No rep!” clearly so the athlete knows. Don’t count it on the card.
- Final Score: When the clock hits zero, write down the final rep count or time. Both you and the athlete need to sign the card to lock it in.
“A judge’s job isn’t to be the ‘bad guy’ – it’s to be the honest witness of an athlete’s hard work.”
Tips for Being a Great Judge
- Stay Focused: The best judges are the ones who stay locked in with their athlete. Your focus helps them stay in the zone and ensures every hard-earned rep is recorded accurately.
- Be Vocal: Clear communication helps the athlete adjust. If their hips aren’t low enough in a squat, tell them!
- Be Encouraging: You can still be a cheerleader while being a strict judge. A simple “keep it up, get that chin over the bar” goes a long way.

Judging in the Open is a fundamental part of our community. It’s an opportunity to support your fellow members and contribute to the atmosphere of the gym.
